Cielo May 2012, up coming 5 yr old.

Cielo has been passed over as far as her training because she was always easy to work with so knowing that, this or that other horse got priority.  A continuing riding program began March 1st of 2012 where by that time, she had accumulated 29 rides over 2 1/2 years.  I began riding her steadily in order to best prepare her to be ridden at a Joe Wolters clinic the first weekend of May.  By the end of the clinic she had a total of 53 rides.  I layed her off for about 2 weeks again because I needed to work with other horses.  That 2 weeks was good even though she should have been ridden. I rode her again May 19 & 20.  I was really pleased with her maturity in the way she managed the course on the 6 mile ride.  The previous 20 rides I had focused on arena work.  During that time, she wanted to shake her head as though she had water in her ears when asked to lope in circles .  The first approach I used was to just keep riding and not make an issue of it.  She was finding the arc of the circle with her spine to the left, but was having a difficult time to the right.  I decided to only trot her, which I did for about 10-15 rides while working only in the arena.
We arrived a day and a half before the start of the clinic.  Gail watched while I was allowing her to become comfortable with the arena area.  She walked, trotted and loped nicely.  Gail mentioned she did not shake her head at all during that ride.  I had not noticed it because I was focusing on other things.  This is a good example of not making an issue of a particular "wrong answer" and one day it will be gone, if you just keep riding.  Cielo is at a point where almost all of her rides will be on trails with the primary focus of just exposing her to many trail situations.  I must bring to your attention no actual conditioning will be addressed because that will develop while trail riding in the hills.  I can put her feet any place, she is soft in the face and she enjoys being outside of the arena.  I am going to use my 3 day riding plan and Gail will ride her for one day after my rides.  This will give her exposure to Gail's system and Gail can get to know her while using her heart rate monitor.
