Split Reins with Red & Black Roo Buttons

These split reins were made for Mathew Hagee by Gail and Eric Hought of Hought Fine Art & Leather & Endurance tack in early 2015.

The strapwork, made by Eric Hought, is doubled and sewn black latigo. Each rein is 8 feet long, ½” wide and ¼” thick.  The 3/8” round diameter section on the bit end is 24” long and the popper end is 14” long.

There are 294 knots braided by Gail Hought. Each main knot has a braided groundwork knot to secure it and give shape to the final finished knot braided over it.  The main knots and ring knots are braided in black and red kangaroo respectively.  Spanish ring knots accent each main knot.

Gordon Hays, silversmith of Bits of Silver, created the sterling silver with red stone accents on the bit and popper ends of the reins.
